Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antibacterials for systemic use, Third-generation cephalosporins

Mechanism of action

Betasporina contains a medicine called ceftriaxone. Ceftriaxone inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis following attachment to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs). This results in the interruption of cell wall (peptidoglycan) biosynthesis, which leads to bacterial cell lysis and death.

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS

• Betasporina is used to treat infections in different parts of the body including the lungs (pneumonia), blood (septicemia), skin, other soft body parts (tissues) and bones. It is also useful in case of infections such as meningitis.
• It can also be given before and after operations to stop infections from happening.

DOSING AND ADMINISTRATION

- Adults, the elderly and children aged 12 years and over ,with body weigh greater than 50 kg:

• The usual dose is 1-2 g once a day.

- Children from 2 to 12 years,with body weight lower than 50 kg:

• The dose is worked out by the doctor based on the child’s weight.
• The usual dose is 20-50 mg/kg of body weight once a day.
• In severe infections the doses may be increased up to 80 mg/kg/day except in the case of meningitis.
