MECHANISM OF ACTION

Betamethasone is a potent drug with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive action with little mineralocorticoid action.

Its main mechanism of action is the activation of a group of proteins known as lipocortins, which in turn, inhibit phospholipase A2, responsible for the synthesis of leukotrienes from arachidonic acid, thus blocking the inflammatory cascade.

On the other hand, betamethasone acts directly on leukocytes, which are white blood cells, inhibiting the release of a series of chemical mediators such as acid hydrolases and interleukins.

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS

It is used for a number of diseases including rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, skin diseases such as dermatitis and psoriasis, allergic conditions such as asthma and angioedema, preterm labor to speed the development of the baby's lungs, Crohn's disease, cancers such as leukemia, and along with fludrocortisone for adrenocortical insufficiency, among others.

HOW TO TAKE ETASON?

- The recommended dose is:

• Adults
  • Short term treatment:
    
    • 2000 - 3000 micrograms (4-6 tablets) daily for the first few days, then;
    • Your doctor may reduce the daily dose by 250 - 500 micrograms (1/2 or 1 tablet) every two to five days, depending on the response.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis:
    
    • 500 - 2000 micrograms (1-4 tablets) daily;
    • For long-term treatment the dose may be lower.
  • Most other conditions:
    
    • 1500 - 5000 micrograms (3-10 tablets) daily for one to three weeks;
    • Your doctor may then gradually reduce this to a lower dose;
    • Larger doses may be needed for mixed connective tissue diseases and ulcerative colitis.
