Ø WHAT CEFRADUR IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Cefradur is an antibiotic (first-generation cephalosporins). The active substance is cefradine.
Cefradur is used to treat bacterial infections, caused by specific strains of bacteria. These
include:
- Respiratory tract infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis and lobar pneumonia) caused by group A
β-hemolytic streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Diplococcuspneumoniae).
- Otitis media caused by group A β-hemolytic streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae
(Diplococcuspneumoniae), Haemophylus influenza and staphylococci.
- Skin and soft tissues infections caused by staphylococci (penicillinsusceptible and
penicillinresistant) and β-hemolytic streptococci.
- Urinary tract infections, including prostatitis caused by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabillis,
Klebsiella spp. and enterococcus (Streptococcus faecalis).
Ø HOW TO TAKE CEFRADUR
Cefradur coated tablets is not recommended in children ëith less than 6 years. Other
formulations should be considered.
Adults
- For respiratory tract infections (other than lobar pneumonia) and skin and soft tissues
infections: the usual dose is 500 mg every 12 hours.
- For lobar pneumonia: the usual dose is 500 mg every 6 hours or 1 g every 12 hours.
- For uncomplicated urinary tract infections: the usual dose is 500 mg every 12 hours.
- For complicated urinary tract infections, including prostatitis: the usual dose is 500 mg every 6
hours or 1 g every 12 hours.
Larger doses (up to 1 g every 6 hours) may be given for severe or chronic infections.
Children
The recommended dose in children over nine months of age is 25 to 50 mg/kg/day administered
in equally divided doses every 6 or 12 hours.
For otitis media the recommended dose is 75 - 100 mg/kg/day administered in equally divided
doses every 6 or 12 hours.
Cefradine dose administered in children should not exceed 4 g per day.
Administration of Cefradine to premature infants and neëborns is not recommended.
The treatment should be extended to 48 to 72 hours after the disappearance of symptoms or
evidence of bacterial eradication.
In group A β-hemolytic streptococci infections, the treatment should be extended for at least 10
days, in order to prevent the possible development of rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis.
Route and method of administration:
Cefradur is administered orally and it may be taken ëithout regard to meals.
